Roy Ayers – Everybody Loves The Sunshine
“Just bees and things and flowers”, sings Roy Ayers on this gem from 1976. Slower than a sunset yet funkier than James Brown’s flares, it’s just the thing to listen to while lying in a field on a serene summer’s day.

Kid Rock – All Summer Long
It rips off the piano in Warren Zevon’s ‘Werewolves of London’ and most of Lynyrd Skynyrd’s ‘Sweet Home Alabama’, but this is still one for good times in the sunshine. Irresistible whether you’re an Eskimo in Greenland or a Mongolian yak-herder.

Kool And The Gang – Summer Madness
Sit back, close your eyes and lose yourself in an instrumental so mellow that you’ll feel like your brain is being dipped in a vat of warm honey. Valium for the ears.

Ella Fitzgerald – Summertime
There have been so many versions of this classic that nobody remembers who sung the original, but by far the smoothest, sultriest rendition belongs firmly to the Queen of Jazz.

Bob Marley – Sun is shining
Hosting a beach party? Whether you’re in Jamaica or Jebel Ali, Bob Marley’s songs have to play a part somewhere.

Bryan Adams – Summer of 69
A dad-rock anthem to blast on the stereo while tending to the chicken skewers on the barbecue. Careful with those red-hot cooking tongs when you play air-guitar.

Snoop Dogg – Drop It Like It’s Hot Featuring Pharell Williams
We do not advocate listening to this at full volume while cruising down Jumeirah Beach Road at jogging-speed in your souped-up Dodge Charger. Well, maybe just this once.

Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66 – Mas Que Nada
Put on your earphones and pretend you’re sipping cocktails on the Copacabana. By the time the Brazil World Cup ends  next year, you’ll be more fed up with this than Ronaldo’s diving.

The Sandals – Theme From The Endless Summer
Stunning guitar-led instrumental from the seminal sixties surf documentary.

Boys of Summer – Don Henley
This is the summer anthem that sold a thousand Wayfarers. Although ‘summer’ here is used more as a metaphor for youth, Boys of Summer has a haunting melody and is a classic from the Eagles drummer’s solo career.
